Chesterfield Cycle Campaign promotes cycle use in Chesterfield for both leisure and utility journeys.  By campaigning for a comprehensive network, we aim to improve conditions for cyclists so that cycling becomes a safer and more attractive option than car travel for local journeys.

Brimington Road

Several members have commented on the "improvements" on Brimington Road and their impact on cyclists especially the new island near Tapton Terrace. The Secretary has arranged a meeting with DCC on Wednesday 30th July at 9.30am on site to discuss this sub-standard facility.

More news after the meeting..................

Family Ride Saturday 26th July

Rather late notice, but just to confirm the 3rd in our series of family rides will take place on Saturday 26th July. Meeting outside the Queen's Park cafe from 2.00pm. The ride will depart at 3.00pm.

The theme is sustainability, we will pass the Leisure Centre with its solar PV array, one of Chesterfields oldest industrial buildings complete with derelict waterwheel, look at a living roof on an extension to a  private house and hear how the walls will be made of straw. There will be a demonstration of a grass scythe and pedal powered refreshments.

If time permits we will return to the park via the Tourist Information Centre which is heated and cooled using a geothermal system.

In all only about 4 miles of cycling, bring a friend along!

New Campaign poster

The Campaign has a new 'recruitment' poster. Copies will be distributed to the Community Forum noticeboards. Could you put up a poster at your workplace, school or doctors surgery? There are two versions for you to print off, in two file formats (low res jpg or high res pdf). One has more health information and is designed for doctors surgeries, the other is more general. If you are able to distribute a poster please e mail the secretary, telling him where it is on display. Files available here or on the 'Campaigning' page.

Planning Decision

At a public meeting of the Planning Committee of Chesterfield Borough Council held on July 1st the application for a relocated Tesco and new football stadium was passed subject to approval by the Secretary of State.

The Campaign objected to this application drawing attention to the lack of cycling infrastructure and the very car-centric nature of the layout.

Current Membership

On May Day 2007 we offered half price membership and 29 people joined that day! Unfortunately some of them have decided not to renew, so from a brief high of 299 we have dropped back to 283. Lets try to get it to 300 during the summer - could you recruit a new member? membership forms are available to download on the 'membership' page.

Great Turnout

There was a great turnout for the Critical Mass ride, around 40 people took part, several trailers and a tandem came along.

One of the participants has started a Facebook gallery here

After a short pause 30 riders went up the Holmebrook Valley Trail to the Peacock at Cutthorpe for the pea & pie supper.

Some riders went home after the Critical Mass and others joined up for the supper so about 55 cyclists turned out for both events!
