Chesterfield Cycle Campaign promotes cycle use in Chesterfield for both leisure and utility journeys.  By campaigning for a comprehensive network, we aim to improve conditions for cyclists so that cycling becomes a safer and more attractive option than car travel for local journeys.

Railway Station Cycle Parking

We heard from East Midland Trains last week that they are going to install new cycle parking at the station. In very quick time it is now in place! The parking will remain on platform 1 and the new parking is covered by CCTV we are told.

This parking is installed ahead of the new link and extension of the Hipper Valley Trail from the skatepark/B & Q area along the old Brampton branch line to the station which is scheduled to be completed by March 2015.

Good and Bad News

The railings on the bridge over the A61 near the Chesterfield hotel have now been replaced with taller ones which now allows 'legal' cycling over the bridge. Members of the committee attended a recent consultation on improvements to the shared path from the station.

Unfortunately the proposed link route in Somersall Park to Hipper Valley phase 3 was rejected by Chesterfield Borough Council.

Canal Towpath Closures

Just heard from Tapton Lock about the following canal path closures:

Chesterfield, Brimington area - On Monday 17th February 2014, contractors working for Derbyshire County Council will be commencing work to re-surface the canal towpath/TPT between Wheeldon Mill Lock and Bilby Lane, with additional works to create a better ramp at Station Road, Brimington.  The towpath itself will be officially closed for a period of up to six weeks.  During this period, please follow the alternative route adjacent to the canal, as advertised in the official footpath closure notices posted on site.  For more information, please contact Tapton Lock Visitor Centre on 01246 551035.

Chesterfield, Hollingwood area – On Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th February 2014, contractors working for Derbyshire County Council will be replacing the old lock gates at Dixon’s Lock.  We may need to temporarily restrict use of the canal towpath/TPT and the adjoining bridge for short periods on these dates to enable the works to take place.  We would be grateful if you would listen to and follow the instructions of any staff of contractors carrying out the work. For more information, please contact Tapton Lock Visitor Centre on 01246 551035.

Canal Towpath at Hollingwood

Message received by the Campaign:

Someone has left a trail on galvanised nails along the towpath near Hollingwood. It would appear to be a deliberate act against cyclists - their description of where:

"if you go from the cafe at Hollingwood towards town there is a over head pipe (white boxed in) well that is where they started dumping the nails as it is the narrowest part of the towpath "
