Cycle Infrastructure DesignThe government has just published new guidance on Cycle Infrastructure Design to guide Local Authorities towards providing cycle friendly road layouts and facilities.  It encourages designers to follow a 'Hierarchy of Provision' and aims to keep cyclists principally on-road by managing traffic conditions to make roads safe for cycling.  High priority measures include reduction of traffic volume and speed, whilst conversion of footpaths to shared use for pedestrians and cyclists should be considered last.
