Happy New Year
Hopefully we can look forward to some new cycling infrastructure to enhance the Chesterfield network in 2021.
Work has started on the shared path from Peak Resort to Dronfield and whilst it isn’t the most ambitious scheme it will provide a more or less traffic free route that will benefit families. The scheme linking the underpasses at Whittington Moor Roundabout to Peak Resort is virtually complete.
The big project for 2021 is of course the planned east – west cycle route between the Royal Hospital and Brookside, look out for the public consultation starting in January and we hope you can comment and support it. We also hope that the new cycle way finding/signage project will be rolled out by DCC.
This year has seen a big increase in the number of people cycling both locally and nationally. We want to get the word out about our Campaign so we have a new flyer being printed shortly and later this year we will need to publish a revised Chesterfield Cycle Map.
We have ordered another public bike pump which we plan to install outside the cafe at Pleasley Pit. Also ordered is a Sheffield stand which we are donating to the Friends of Spital Cemetery.

Emergency Active Travel Fund Tranche 2
Derbyshire County Council have been awarded £1.68M for their proposal for tranche 2 to create a walking and cycling route from the Royal Hospital to Brookside. It will upgrade existing infrastructure and build new as well.
Public consultation will begin in January but there is already a page on DCC’s website.
We are pleased to say that following the vandalism on Crow Lane with the blocks being moved they have been replaced and reinforced.

Crow Lane
One of the concrete blocks on Crow Lane has been moved to allow cars through. Please take care if cycling (or walking) on Crow Lane.

Active Travel Fund
We know Derbyshire County Council have submitted their bid for the 2nd tranche of active travel funding which we hope may include more cycling measures in Chesterfield.
Ahead of the announcement and with the governments ‘Gear Change’ policy in mind which urges local authorities to reallocate road space for walking and cycling we have emailed the four main local political parties to ask them for their views.
Labour – acknowledgement (17th August) but no reply
Conservative – no reply
Lib Dem – see their reply here
Green – see their reply here

Shared Path
The new route along a shared path/quiet roads between Whittington Moor roundabout and Peak Resort is gradually taking shape. It is complete between Whit’ Moor and the underpass on the A61 dual carriageway albeit with further signage needed.
The section along the ‘old’ Sheffield Road is gradually being built with a widened shared footway. There is now a new Toucan crossing and widened shared footway to get into the Peak Resort site and access to the bridleway.
