Five Pits Trail resurfacing work is starting on 9th January 2 sections being delivered simultaneously:-
- Tibshelf Road to Heath Road, Holmewood
- Timber Lane to Locko Lane
- Timber Lane car park will be closed for the duration of works, 1 – 2 weeks. work will then move on to Tibshelf and we’ll update further on that closer to the time.

New infrastructure
As proposed in the application a section of shared path has been built alongside the new office block at Waterside. Sadly no dropped kerb at the northern end!
There are plentiful cycle racks at the side of the building too.

East West Walking & Cycling Route
We’ve just heard from Derbyshire County Council that the route will go ahead! There was a majority of responses in favour of closing Crow Lane to traffic, reducing the speed limit on Chatsworth Road and creating the segregated cycle lane on Chatsworth Road.
Work should begin in the new year.

Waterside & Tapton Business Park
A planning application (CHE/22/00604/FUL) has been submitted for housing and commercial space at Tapton Business Park as part of the Chesterfield Waterside project. It proposes to demolish the existing buildings and replacing them with 84 houses, 61 apartments/flats and commercial units.
The application does include some shared cycling and walking paths, which is a positive. For cyclists however, the path does not link up with existing infrastructure – it’s a dead-end.
The Campaign are objecting to the current proposals as:
- The cycle path is isolated and has no onward cycle connections. This contravenes Chesterfield Borough Councils CLP22 local plan.
- The shared path within the development appears to end in ninety degree turns and steps. This isn’t acceptable for a cycle route.
The Avant Waterside cycle path (currently under construction) promised a bridge to link back to the canal towpath. If this bridge is built, designating the bridge between the two developments as a cycle route would establish a northern connection.
Connections to the south of the development are more difficult to see, perhaps a route could be made back to the (non LTN 1/20 compliant) shared route being built alongside Brimington Road.

Infrastructure Improvements
Still waiting for news of the East West route going ahead but the protected crossing of Park Road is at last being built. We’ve also seen cutting back of undergrowth on the station link, Stonegravels Way and ‘gas holder’ path (no longer gas holders there!). Another short section of the Peak Resort to Dronfield shared path has been completed alongside Unstone Junior school.

Friday Night Ride
The next ride is on Friday 2nd September. Leaving from the town hall steps at 6.30pm we’ll be using quiet roads to go out through Newbold to drop back into Holmebrook Valley Park to return to Chesterfield. Stopping for chips at Loundsley Green on the way.
Please bring cash if you want something from the chippy! All welcome. -

We’ve heard from Derbyshire County Council that the complaints made by Chesterfield Civic Society have been considered by the Local Government Ombudsman and decisions have been made. However they are not yet published so no news as yet whether the scheme will go ahead.
