Avenue Site

The Avenue site (old Coalite plant near Wingerworth) will be the site of a large housing development. The Campaign believes it is essential to provide good sustainable transport links into the site.

Routes through the site will link Chesterfield to the Five Pits Trail and Clay Cross. From the south end of the site a link route along Mill Lane to Grassmoor will allow access to the Five Pits Trail. There is an existing traffic free path to Tupton.

The north end of the site is more problematical. Originally a route was identified leaving the site over the railway bridge and down the track to Storforth Lane. However this involves steep up and down gradients. The path is also owned by Network Rail and is not actually a right of way.

The Campaign prefers a flatter route past McGregors Pond and is championing that idea.

We believe that neither Derbyshire County Council nor NE Derbyshire DC have fully considered a commuting route north of the site, purely thought of leisure routes. Because of their stance a major opportunity has been missed.

Lottery funding has been given to a group called Grassland Hasmoor who want to develop walking and cycling links between Hasland and Grassmoor. Part of that plan is to link The Green with the railway bridge at the north end of the site.
